چکیده

D OGS given lethal total-body exposure to radiation, in the range below that causing death from intestinal damage, can survive if suitable supportive treatment is given and if a successful transplant of marrow is made.14 The duration of survival is varied, depending primarily upon success in overcoming delayed secondary syndromes relating to the graft of foreign marrow. The severity of the syndromes depends upon the degree of foreignness of the transplant and the degree of control of its reaction with antimetabolites.5 \Then all goes well, survival rates of up to 50 per cent can be obtained in the dog.5’” The general well-being of these long-term survivors is a matter of clinical interest and a subject of the following communication.

B ONE MARROW TRANSPLANTATION may effectively protect dogs exposed to whole-body ionizing radiations of 2 to 3 LD95. Hematopoiesis was investigated at remote periods after the exposure, when the hematopoietic stem cells had been proliferating in the lethally irradiated organism for a long time. Ferrebee and his associates’6 succeeded in attaining long-term survival of supralethally irradiated do...

The Recovery of Lethally Irradiated Dogs given Infusions of Autologous Leukocytes Preserved at -80 C.

ETHALLY irradiated dogs usually recover promptly if given several billion fresh, autologous, marrow cells.1’2 Autologous marrow, stored at low temperature in glycerol or dimethyl-sulfoxide, induces a similar recovery.35 Recent studies of lethally irradiated mice have shown that infusions of fresh, isogenic leukocytes, if given in sufficient number, are followed by survival and return of marrow ...

Effect of cimetidine and famotidine on survival of lethally gamma irradiated mice

Background: Currently available radioprotectors are poorly tolerated in man and the general use of aminothiols is compromised by their side effects. This study was carried out to test and compare the radioprotective potential of cimetidine and famotidine against lethally gamma irradiated NMRI mice. Materials and Methods: Adult male NMRI mice in groups of 10 were exposed to various doses of gamm...
